Malda, West Bengal – September 14, 2025 – A 24-year-old final-year medical student from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Anindita Soren, died under suspicious circumstances at Malda Medical College and Hospital on Friday, September 12, 2025. Her family has accused her boyfriend, Ujjwal Soren, a junior doctor at the same hospital, of murdering her, prompting a police investigation into whether the death was a suicide or homicide.

Family Alleges Murder Over Relationship Dispute

Anindita, a resident of Balurghat in Dakshin Dinajpur district, was reportedly in Malda to meet Ujjwal Soren, a junior doctor from Purulia. The couple, who met through social media and medical events, had a romantic relationship that culminated in a temple marriage in Puri, Odisha, according to Anindita’s mother, Alpana Tudu. Tudu claimed her daughter was pregnant and that Ujjwal refused to formalize the marriage legally, forcing Anindita to undergo an abortion, which strained their relationship.

Circumstances Leading to the Death

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Anindita traveled to Malda to resolve issues with Ujjwal and booked a hotel room in the town. On Friday afternoon, her family received a call from Ujjwal stating she had fallen seriously ill and was admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital. Upon arriving, they found her in critical condition. Efforts to transfer her to Kolkata failed, and she died during the journey.

Police Investigation Underway

The English Bazar Police Station in Malda registered a case of unnatural death and detained Ujjwal Soren on Saturday, September 13, 2025, after he was initially reported absconding. “The initial investigation says that the cause of death was an overdose of a particular drug. But the real reason behind the death could be ascertained only after the detailed post-mortem and viscera reports are available,” a Malda District Police officer stated.

"My daughter had been murdered, and her fiancee probably fed her something poisonous. My daughter cannot commit suicide. We want the strictest punishment for him."
