In this conversation with MedBound Times, Dr. Charu Sinha reflects on her journey from her early days in dentistry to entrepreneurship and leadership. She shares insights on career growth, the importance of adaptability and communication in clinical practice, and how innovation, quality management, and community-focused initiatives can shape the future of dental care.
Dr. Akriti: Dr. Charu, could you start by briefly describing your journey? What motivated you to choose dentistry?
Dr. Charu Sinha: My journey into dentistry actually began on a train journey. I met a senior who was in her final year of dentistry at the same alma mater I would later join. We were from the same city and as we spoke, the conversation naturally turned to dentistry. I had just completed my board exams at that time, and listening to her experiences sparked a genuine interest in the field.
What stayed with me from that conversation was the idea that dentistry allows you to directly impact someone’s confidence. The ability to help people smile freely and feel better about themselves really appealed to me. As I progressed through my BDS program, I realised that dentistry demands perseverance, discipline, and continuous learning. Long hours in practicals and clinical postings became a part of daily life, and those experiences helped build both skills and resilience.
Over time, my interest grew beyond clinical work alone. My inclination toward community health, preventive care, and service strengthened my motivation further. Dentistry, for me, became not just a profession, but a meaningful way to contribute to public well-being.
Dr. Akriti: Looking back at your journey from BDS days, what were the experiences that shaped your foundation as a young dentist?
Dr. Charu Sinha: During my BDS days, I was deeply involved in community-based dental work. I participated in organizing dental camps across rural areas, old age homes, orphanages, schools, and underserved communities. Since my college itself was located in a rural area, we made a conscious effort to keep treatments affordable and accessible for everyone.
Alongside academics and clinical work, I was also actively involved in organizing events and workshops, and I regularly attended webinars, symposiums, and training programs. These experiences exposed me to different perspectives and helped me understand dentistry beyond textbooks
Treating patients firsthand and seeing how even simple procedures could restore confidence reinforced the human side of dentistry for me. One of the most rewarding aspects of this phase was the appreciation I received from patients for the care I provided.
Dr. Akriti: Every professional journey has defining moments. Could you describe one pivotal experience that significantly changed your perspective or direction?
Dr. Charu Sinha: One moment that really changed the way I looked at my career happened early on, during my rural outreach work. I was involved in organizing dental camps, working with ASHA workers in Medinipur, and treating patients who had never visited a dentist before. Seeing their situation up close made me realise how deeply lack of awareness, scenes and structured support affects the communities. What stayed with me was the feeling that dentistry alone was not enough. Even when clinicians were skilled and willing, the absence of systems, training pathways, and proper support limited what could be truly achieved. This experience continued to influence me as I moved into areas like clinical research, hospital administration, training, and quality systems.
Over time, I began noticing another side of the problem. Dental professionals themselves were struggling, often due to limited guidance, fragmented learning opportunities, and very little integration of technology into daily practice. That realization was a turning point for me. This is where the idea of Dental Plus Direct began to take shape. It was born from the need to connect dentistry with technology, edict, and structured growth. What started as community-focused work gradually evolved into a larger vision: to support clinics, professional, startup’s, and educators, and to build an ecosystem where knowledge, innovation, and opportunity are more accessible.
Dr. Akriti: Among your early milestones, what professional achievement stands out as particularly meaningful to you, and why?
Dr. Charu Sinha: Being a founder of Dental Plus Direct where we are focusing on a 360 degree approach for the dental community. At present it is in the building stage and we are actively working for it.
Dr. Akriti : Balancing clinical responsibilities, ongoing learning, and personal life is challenging. What routines or approaches helped you maintain clarity and balance during these phases?
Dr. Charu Sinha : Balancing clinical work, continuous learning, and personal life was never easy, but having a structure made a significant difference for me. Everything gets aligned by time management. I followed dedicated and fixed time slots for clinical duties, learning, and personal or family time, and tried not to mix one into the other. Of course, not every day went according to plan, especially during my BDS years and later while handling administrative responsibilities. That’s where having a plan B helped. I learned to prioritize tasks based on urgency and impact instead of trying to do everything at once.
I also found value in simple habits like self-reflection, journaling and taking short mental breaks to reset. Staying connected with mentors and supportive colleagues has also helped. Most importantly I have learned to be kind to myself and accept that some imbalance is a part of growth.
Dr. Akriti : Could you share a moment when you felt discouraged, and what helped you regain your motivation during that phase?
Dr. Charu Sinha : Honestly, I never felt truly discouraged in my career, and a big reason for that is my openness to asking questions. Whenever I felt unsure or confused, I made it a point to reach out to the right people instead of keeping the doubts to myself.
I strongly believe that when you ask the right questions and build the right network, you find solutions rather than confusion.
Dr. Akriti : Over time, what skills, habits, or mindsets do you believe have been most critical in shaping your professional growth?
Dr. Charu Sinha : Over time, I have realized that flexibility and a strong learning mindset have been the most critical factors in my growth. Dentistry and healthcare keep evolving, so being willing to learn according to the changing trends has helped. I’ve also learned the importance of being productive, not just busy, and adapting quickly when situations or responsibilities change. Volunteering for social causes played a big role in shaping my empathy and perspective.
I also believe everyone should develop at least a small entrepreneurial mindset and learn to think independently, solve problems, and create value. As my journey expanded, these skills helped in building something meaningful like Dental Plus Direct. Above all, focusing on impact, whether it’s educating a single patient or empowering a group of professionals, has kept me aligned with my goals and given purpose to my work.
Dr. Akriti : Looking back, what practical advice do you wish someone had told you in your internship or initial years of practice?
Dr. Charu Sinha : Looking back, I wish someone had told me early on that dentistry is not just about mastering procedures, but also about how well you communicate with your patients. During my internship, I was very focused on technical perfection, believing that strong clinical skills alone were enough. Over time. I realized that patients value clarity, reassurance, and being heard, just as much as the treatment itself. Another important thing I wish I had learned sooner is the importance of administrative skills. Dental colleges prepare us clinically, but it doesn’t teach us how to manage a practice or handle systems.
These learnings helped me in building my brand (Dental Plus Direct) wherein I aim to fill in the gaps I faced during my early years.
Dr. Akriti : For students and young dentists exploring different career paths, what opportunities should they be ready to embrace, and what challenges should they prepare to navigate?
Dr. Charu Sinha : This is actually a very exciting phase for young dentists, because dentistry today goes far beyond just working in a clinic. There are opportunities in community health, hospital administration, research, quality and accreditation, medical devices, dental startup’s, digital dentistry, AI-based healthcare solutions, training, content creation, and leadership roles. The profession is evolving rapidly and platforms like Dental Plus Direct exist because dentists today are contributing in many different and meaningful ways.
At the same time, these opportunities come with challenges of uncertainty, limited exposure, skill gaps, and the pressure to keep upgrading. Choosing the right direction, being adaptable, improving communication skills, becoming digitally aware, and staying open to continuous learning are no longer optional.
My advice is to stay curious and proactive. Explore internships, seek mentors, participate in community camps, attend workshops, get involved in research, and start building networks early. The career paths in dentistry are expanding and those who are willing to explore, learn and adapt, will be the pioneers.
Dr. Akriti : Finally, how do you envision your future career trajectory? What are your goals or aspirations for the next 5–10 years?
Dr. Charu Sinha : Over the next years, I see my career growing at the intersection of impact, innovation, and purpose, with Dental Plus Direct at the centre of that journey. My primary focus is to scale DPD into a nationally trusted ecosystem that genuinely supports the dental community. I want to strengthen all its verticals, from clinical and academic training to quality systems, technology integration, and community outreach, so it truly addresses the gap I’ve witnessed throughout my professional journey. My vision is to build a model where dentists from Tier-1 to Tier-3 cities have equal access to structured training, digital tools, mentorship, career guidance, and practice-building support. I also see DPD playing a strong role in quality and accreditation, helping clinics adopt NABH and ISO standards in a way that is practical and efficient.
On a personal level, I want to keep growing as a leader, educator, and quality expert, while deepening my understanding of healthcare systems, audits, digital health, and public health. More than titles or milestones, my long-term aspiration is simple: to build something that truly elevates the dental profession, empowers dentists and improves access to consistent, quality dental care across India.
