Mau private hospital, Indrajeet Hospital in Ratanpura, was functioning via an alternate entrance despite being seized a year ago by the administration and health department.
The victim’s husband, Ajit Rajbhar, a resident of Targouli village in Ballia district, filed a complaint with the chief medical officer alleging that his pregnant wife Sarita was treated at Indrajeet Hospital in Ratanpura on September 8.
According to the lodged complaint, they were advised by an ASHA worker to take Sarita to the hospital, where a doctor, Himanshu Yadav, allegedly told the family that her condition was serious and advised an operation.
The newborn died after the delivery while Sarita continued to bleed. Subsequently, the hospital staff refused to continue her treatment, and Rajbhar then took his wife to a private hospital in Mau, from where she was referred to Varanasi. Doctors at a private hospital in Varanasi declared her dead, according to the complaint.
Pankaj Rai, Chief Medical Officer of Mau, informed the public that Indrajeet Hospital had been originally sealed in November 2025 on the instructions of the district magistrate. At the time, concerns regarding alleged negligence in the treatment of patients had also surfaced, Rai said.
"The main lock was intact, but the hospital was being operated by opening a passage from the back," Rai said, “After receiving information about the incident, the health department, in coordination with the sub-divisional magistrate, sealed the hospital again,” he added.
The CMO assured that a complaint had also been lodged against the hospital operator, and action is being taken to register an FIR.
Following the incident, authorities sealed the hospital again on September 9, officials said.
The investigation is ongoing, and the administration is probing how treatment was allegedly being carried out at the sealed facility, officials said.
The incident raised questions over the lack of a proper healthcare monitoring system in the area and sheds light on the need to rigorously visit sites providing medical services for quality checks and audits.
