NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old factory worker from Bahadurgarh, Haryana, has undergone a successful hand reimplantation surgery at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, New Delhi. The worker’s right hand was completely severed by a laser woodcutting machine, and he was rushed to the hospital on September 28th. According to hospital authorities, a team of plastic and orthopedic surgeons worked for nine hours to reattach the hand. The patient managed to retrieve his severed hand and sought immediate medical assistance.

Initially taken to a local hospital, he was later referred to Dr. RML Hospital in New Delhi. Upon arrival, he was swiftly transferred to the Department of Plastic Surgery, where a dedicated team led by Prof. Dr. Mukesh Sharma began the complex procedure. The success of the surgery was made possible through coordinated efforts involving the OT nursing staff, paramedics, blood bank, and laboratory services.

Following the surgery, the patient was kept in intensive care for three days and is now in stable condition. Dr. Sameek Bhattacharya, Director Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery at RML Hospital, highlighted the importance of prompt action in such emergencies. “If the amputated part is brought to the hospital within six hours, the chances of successful replantation increase significantly,” Dr. Bhattacharya stated. He also emphasized the correct handling of the amputated part, which should be cleaned with water or sterile saline, wrapped in moistened gauze, placed in an airtight bag, and stored in an icebox.

Dr. Sharma’s team, comprising senior residents Dr. Sonika, Dr. Sukriti, Dr. Dhawal, Dr. Bully, Dr. Vignesh, and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Manjesh and Dr. Subham, carried out the intricate procedure. Supported by the anesthesia team led by Prof. Dr. Namita Arora and assisted by Dr. Shubhi, Dr. Ashutosh, and Dr. Sonal, the operation involved advanced microvascular techniques.

During the nine-hour procedure, surgeons meticulously repaired the bones and tendons, and reconnected the arteries, veins, and nerves using a microscope. Known for its advanced facilities, RML Hospital has a highly skilled surgical team available around the clock for emergencies. The anesthesia department, led by Dr. Neerja Banerjee, ensures ongoing support for critical surgeries.

Prof. Dr. Ajay Shukla, Director and Medical Superintendent of RML Hospital, praised the dedication of the surgical team and highlighted the hospital’s commitment to offering high-end surgeries free of cost, ensuring accessible healthcare for all.
