A tragic incident at Capital Hospital in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, has left a family grieving the loss of a 28-year-old woman, Akansha Mavi, who died after a lift malfunctioned. The accident occurred shortly after she gave birth to a baby girl and was being transferred from the operation theatre to her room.

SSP Meerut Dr. Vipin Tada revealed to TOI that the catastrophic lift failure occurred when the belt snapped, gruesomely entrapping Akansha's neck in the gates and inflicting a severe, ultimately fatal fracture. In a shocking display of negligence, hospital staff and doctors allegedly abandoned their posts and fled the scene, disregarding the family's frantic cries for help.

An FIR has been lodged under Section 105 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against the hospital owner, Dr. Kavita (first name only), and other staff members for their failure to help rescue the woman. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ashok Kataria stated that the hospital's lift maintenance records are under scrutiny, and strict action will follow if negligence is identified.

Authorities arrived at the scene an hour later and recovered the woman’s body. She was subsequently rushed to a nearby private hospital, where, tragically, doctors pronounced her "brought dead". The chaos led to angry relatives vandalizing hospital property, and 13 patients admitted to the facility were subsequently transferred to another hospital.

Miraculously, two hospital staff members who were trapped alongside Akansha in the malfunctioning lift managed to escape with relatively minor injuries, although they were forced to endure a harrowing 45-minute ordeal before being rescued.

Akansha's husband Ankush Mavi, an Army officer, and two daughters mourn her loss. The family alleged gross negligence, with one relative stating that after the lift malfunctioned, it took 45 minutes to rescue her, during which hospital staff fled instead of arranging for a mechanic or providing aid.

Senior Police Officer Ayush Vikram Singh confirmed that the newborn was safe and had been moved to another hospital. He also stated that legal action would be pursued, although no arrests have been made as the hospital staff remain absconding.

Meanwhile, the City Magistrate, Anil Kumar, indicated that a technical inspection of the lift is underway, and the hospital’s license could be canceled if any lapses are discovered. Dr. Kataria added that overloading might have caused the lift to fail and emphasized that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible if negligence is proven.
