A couple in Chennai has come under police scrutiny after choosing to deliver their third child at home, guided solely by a WhatsApp group titled Home Birth Experiences. The decision, made without any medical consultation, has drawn widespread attention and sparked debates over the use of unverified online platforms for critical health decisions.
Manoharan, a 36-year-old earthmover operator, and his 32-year-old wife Sukanya, are said to have skipped all prenatal medical consultations throughout Sukanya's pregnancy. Instead, they relied entirely on guidance from a WhatsApp group comprising over 1,000 members.
On November 17, Sukanya went into labor, and Manoharan performed the delivery himself at their residence, following instructions shared within the group. This was the couple’s third child, with their older daughters aged eight and four.
The local Public Health Officer filed a complaint with the Kundrathur police, citing a breach of medical safety regulations. Authorities have identified the WhatsApp group as a key factor in influencing the couple’s decision. The group is said to contain posts with detailed instructions and illustrations for home births, often discouraging professional medical involvement.
Police questioned Manoharan and uncovered his connection to the group. Local health officials reportedly explained the risks involved in relying on such unverified information. They assured that Sukanya and her newborn would receive appropriate medical care.
The mother and child are reported to be in stable condition following the home delivery. Sukanya is now undergoing routine postnatal check-ups, and the newborn is receiving necessary medical attention to ensure their health remains uncompromised.
