CHENNAI: Customers at a bakery in Porur were left appalled on Sunday when they discovered fungus and worms in a cake that was served to them. Despite raising the issue with the bakery staff, they were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation.
The shocking incident unfolded when a customer noticed the contamination after his pregnant wife had already eaten a portion of the cake. Alarmed by the situation, he immediately approached the bakery staff and demanded an explanation. However, the staff attributed the issue to a mistake without offering a proper resolution.
During the exchange, the customer also observed that other food items displayed at the bakery lacked important details such as manufacturing, storage, and expiry dates.
"My wife is pregnant, and we've spent considerable money on ensuring her health. This negligence could now pose a serious risk to her well-being. Who will be held accountable if she falls sick? The Food Safety Department must take stringent action to prevent such incidents. All bakeries should adhere to strict safety guidelines," the customer emphasized.
Officials from the Food Safety Department have since intervened and initiated an investigation. "It is mandatory for food products to include manufacturing and expiry dates. We have received the complaint and are currently inspecting the bakery. Any violations of the Food Safety and Standards Authority guidelines related to manufacturing, storage, packaging, or sales will result in penalties," stated the city’s designated food safety officer.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have assured the public that appropriate action will be taken to ensure food safety compliance.
