Zomato Delists a Restaurant in Patiala after a 10-Year-Old Dies of Eating Birthday Cake

Quality and safety of food is came to the headlines again. A 10-year-old died in Patiala, Punjab after eating a birthday cake ordered from Zomato.  The food delivery platform removed the bakery from its platform.

On Sunday, Zomato declared that it had delisted a restaurant and barred its owner from operating any entities after the death of a 10-year-old girl after eating a birthday cake ordered from a restaurant in Patiala through the Zomato platform.

Zomato company spokesperson said that they are heartbroken and deeply shaken up by the recent tragic incident that happened in Patiala. As soon as they learned about the incident, which is now under police investigation, they immediately delisted the restaurant from the Zomato platform. They have also banned the restaurant owner from operating any entity on Zomato. They are extending their complete support to the law enforcement agencies in the matter.

Following the complaint by the girl’s family, police have lodged a case against the restaurant owner under IPC (Indian Penal Code) section 273 (sale of noxious drink or food) and 304-A (Causing death by negligence). To know the cause of the death, viscera samples were sent to a laboratory.

The girl is identified as 10-year-old Manvi, a class 5 student. On March 24, the girl’s family ordered a cake to celebrate the girl’s birthday. After eating the cake the girl and her family fell ill and started vomiting. The next morning, the girl’s family rushed her to the hospital as the health of the girl worsened. The girl was declared dead by the doctors at the hospital.

A health official said that the girl’s family visited him on Thursday. he told them to lodge a formal complaint with the police and with the health department. Food teams were acquainted to visit the house and gather samples of the cake. According to the reports three people including the manager and two employees of the restaurant were arrested. Raminder Kaur, Civil Surgeon instructed an inquiry into the issue.
