In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old groom-to-be died of an alleged anesthesia overdose at a dental clinic in Hyderabad. The incident happened on February 16, when he visited the dental clinic for a ‘Smile Design’ procedure to enhance his smile ahead of his wedding.

Smile design is an esthetic makeover that aims to create a harmonious masticatory system, ensuring the coordination of teeth, tissues, muscles, skeletal structures, and joints for stability. In planning aesthetic treatments, smile design must integrate with an extensive patient care approach. Success and functionality hinge on understanding the relationship among oral structures, including muscles, bones, joints, gingival tissues, and occlusion. 1

The surgery occurred at FMS (Face Makeover and Smiles Clinic) International Dental Clinic in Jubilee Hills, where Laxmi Narayan passed away last Friday.

According to the FMS International website, it claims to be among the most decorated dental clinics in India, having received over 50 awards from 2017 to 2023. 2

The deceased was identified as Laxmi Narayan Vinjam (28). The family of the man said he had gone to the clinic for a smile designing' procedure.

The deceased's father, Ramulu Vinjam, called his son's phone that evening, which was attended by the clinic staff. However, clinic staff informed the deceased’s father that his son had fallen unconscious during the procedure. His family mentioned that Narayan was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival.

According to the NDTV, the Station House Officer of Jubilee Hills, K. Venkateshwar Reddy, said that Laxmi Narayana arrived at the clinic around 2.30 pm on February 16.

Meanwhile, the family lodged a complaint against the dental clinic under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The family members also alleged Laxmi Narayan was administered anesthesia in excess amount, which led to his death.

The police collected the CCTV evidence from the clinic. Further probe into the case is in progress.
