In a shocking case of calculated murder and insurance deception, a doctor in Saharanpur was taken into custody by Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly setting a man ablaze inside a car to stage his own death. The accused, identified as Dr. Mubarak, reportedly carried out the crime to escape debts totaling ₹30 lakh and claim insurance payouts.
Superintendent of Police (City) Abhimanyu Manglik explained that the doctor’s plan was influenced by a popular television series, CID. Initially, Dr. Mubarak sought an unclaimed body but, failing that, targeted Sonu, a local man described as a habitual drinker.
On the night of December 22, the doctor invited Sonu to a roadside eatery, where they consumed alcohol. Dr. Mubarak allegedly spiked Sonu’s drink with sedatives. Once unconscious, Sonu was placed in the doctor’s car, which was driven to a deserted area near the Yamuna canal, doused in petrol, and set ablaze.
The charred remains of a Maruti 800 car were discovered the next morning near Bajopura canal. Tracing the vehicle’s registration led police to Dr. Mubarak. Simultaneously, Sonu’s family filed a missing person report, further pointing to the doctor’s involvement.
During interrogation, Dr. Mubarak reportedly admitted to committing the crime because he wanted to become rich quickly. He explained that he had planned to fake his death so his wife could claim insurance money and clear his debts. Authorities discovered key evidence, such as a petrol can, a pair of gloves, and Sonu's necklace, which had been taken off prior to setting the car ablaze. CCTV footage also showed Dr. Mubarak and Sonu purchasing alcohol on the night of the incident.
Police revealed that Dr. Mubarak’s wife had no knowledge of his intentions to commit murder. Investigators believe she thought he would use an unclaimed body to fake his death.
Dr. Mubarak has been charged with murder and sent to jail, with further investigations underway. SP Manglik stated that the case was meticulously planned, but the police were able to piece together evidence quickly, leading to the arrest. He emphasized that the accused had confessed to the crime and that further links were being investigated.
