Santa Barbara, California – A group of healthcare workers at Pesetas Urgent Care, a facility under Sansum Clinic affiliated with Sutter Health, has been terminated after a social media post mocking patients sparked widespread outrage.
The post, originally uploaded over Labor Day weekend by a former employee using the TikTok handle @angieuncut, featured six images of staff posing with stains presumed to be bodily fluids on exam room paper coverings. One image included the caption “Guess the substance,” another read “Are patients allowed to leave you guys gifts?” In another, a nurse gave a thumbs-up beside a stain, while elsewhere staff pointed and laughed, with one sticking her tongue out, and a final image carried the phrase “Make sure to leave your healthcare workers sweet gifts like these.”
Sutter Health confirmed the individual who posted the video had left the organization in July. Within 24 hours of becoming aware of the post, the staff shown in the video were placed on administrative leave; all were subsequently terminated within another 24 hours.
The behavior, which violated policies on professionalism and patient respect, prompted a full internal review.
Sutter health released a statement reaffirming its commitment to patient dignity and trust and stated that such behavior would not be tolerated.
The video quickly went viral, despite its removal from TikTok, and spread across platforms such as Reddit and Instagram via screenshots and reposts. Social media users responded with strong criticism. Many users demanded accountability and of chances of other more personal photos would have been clicked by the healthcare workers. The incident also triggered an influx of negative online reviews for the clinic.
Medical professionals bear a responsibility to uphold patient confidentiality and dignity. This incident underscores the importance for healthcare organizations to enforce robust social media use policies, reinforce ethical training, and respond promptly to breaches.
Sutter Health has indicated plans to reinforce policy awareness across its network to prevent similar incidents in the future.
