A large study using data from the UK Biobank has found that filtered coffee consumption was associated with markers of slower biological aging, while instant coffee consumption was associated with markers of faster biological aging. The researchers emphasized that the findings show an association rather than a cause-and-effect relationship.

Published in npj science of food on July 15, 2026, the study is the first to specifically investigate whether different coffee brewing methods are associated with biological aging using multiple validated aging markers.1

How the UK Biobank Study Compared Filtered and Instant Coffee

Researchers analyzed health and dietary data from 49,414 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank, one of the world's largest population-based health databases. Participants had an average age of 56.4 years, 44.3% were women, and most lived in England.

The team examined whether different coffee brewing methods, including filtered coffee, instant coffee, and other coffee types, were associated with biological aging.

To improve the reliability of the findings, the analyses accounted for several factors that could influence aging, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, education, socioeconomic status, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and coffee additives such as milk, sugar, and artificial sweeteners. Additional analyses also considered total calorie intake.

What Is Biological Aging?

Chronological age refers to the number of years a person has lived, whereas biological age reflects how well the body's cells, tissues, and organs are functioning. Two people of the same chronological age may have different biological ages depending on their overall health and lifestyle.

To estimate biological aging, the researchers used three established biomarkers:

  • Klemera-Doubal Biological Age Acceleration (KDM-BA Accel)

  • Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAge Accel)

  • Relative leukocyte telomere length (rLTL), a marker commonly used to assess cellular aging

Using multiple measures allowed the researchers to evaluate biological aging from different perspectives rather than relying on a single marker.

Filtered Coffee vs Instant Coffee: What Did the Study Find?

After adjusting for multiple health and lifestyle factors, the researchers found that filtered coffee consumption was associated with lower biological age acceleration and generally longer telomere length. In contrast, instant coffee consumption was associated with higher biological age acceleration and shorter telomere length.

The researchers also observed a dose-response relationship. As filtered coffee intake increased, biological age acceleration generally decreased. Conversely, higher intake of instant coffee was associated with greater biological age acceleration.

Notably, these associations were not consistently observed for other coffee types, suggesting that brewing method may play an important role.

Why Filtered Coffee and Instant Coffee May Affect Biological Aging Differently

Different brewing methods produce coffee with different chemical compositions because of variations in processing and preparation.

The authors noted that filtered coffee generally contains different levels of bioactive compounds, including chlorogenic acids, and that paper filters remove many diterpenes, compounds naturally present in coffee. These differences may partly explain the observed associations, although further research is needed to confirm the underlying biological mechanisms.

Possible Biological Mechanisms Linking Coffee to Biological Aging

The investigators also examined biological pathways that might help explain the associations.

Their analyses suggested that three biological markers may partially mediate the relationship between coffee type and biological aging:

  • Glycoprotein acetylation (GlycA), a blood marker of chronic inflammation

  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR), which reflects the amount of energy the body uses at rest

  • Cystatin C, a marker commonly used to assess kidney function

Among these, GlycA explained the largest proportion of the association between instant coffee consumption and biological age acceleration, suggesting that chronic inflammation may contribute to the observed relationship. However, these findings identify potential biological pathways and do not establish causation.

Additional Analyses Confirmed the Coffee and Biological Aging Findings

To test the robustness of the results, the researchers performed several sensitivity analyses.

The associations remained largely unchanged after excluding participants with cardiovascular disease, cancer, or diabetes. Similar results were also observed after excluding participants who consumed coffee with added sugar, artificial sweeteners, milk, or decaffeinated coffee, and after accounting for total calorie intake.

Secondary analyses also suggested that some associations were more pronounced in certain groups, including older adults, men, and current smokers.

The study concluded,

Filtered coffee has potential benefits for mitigating the aging process, while instant coffee may exacerbate aging.

What Earlier Research Says About Coffee and Healthy Aging

Previous research suggests that coffee may support healthy aging due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Studies have associated moderate coffee consumption with better metabolic health, improved cognitive function, and a lower risk of several age-related diseases, although excessive intake may have unwanted effects.

A 2026 Nature Communications3 study also found that coffee can influence the gut microbiome and its metabolites, suggesting that some of its health effects may be mediated through the gut–brain axis. Additionally, a large New England Journal of Medicine4 study reported that moderate coffee consumption, particularly unsweetened coffee, was associated with a lower risk of death, though the findings were observational and do not prove causation.

An umbrella review published in The BMJ reported that drinking around three to four cups of coffee per day was linked to more health benefits than risks for most adults. However, high caffeine intake may increase anxiety, disrupt sleep, and may not be suitable for everyone, including pregnant women and individuals with certain heart rhythm disorders.2

What Are the Limitations of the Study?

The researchers acknowledged several limitations.

The study was cross-sectional, meaning coffee consumption and biological aging markers were measured at the same time. As a result, it cannot determine whether filtered coffee slows biological aging or instant coffee accelerates it.

Coffee intake was self-reported, making recall bias possible. Although the analyses adjusted for numerous lifestyle and health factors, residual confounding cannot be ruled out. In addition, coffee preferences may reflect broader lifestyle and socioeconomic differences that were not fully captured in the analysis.

The study population also consisted predominantly of White European participants, which may limit how well the findings apply to other populations. Finally, current biological aging biomarkers cannot fully capture every aspect of the aging process.

More Research Is Needed on Filtered Coffee and Biological Aging

The researchers concluded that filtered coffee was associated with more favorable biological aging markers, whereas instant coffee was associated with less favorable biological aging markers. However, because the study was observational, it cannot establish a causal relationship.

The authors noted that further prospective studies and randomized clinical trials are needed to determine whether different coffee brewing methods directly influence biological aging and to better understand the biological mechanisms involved.
