The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, allowing movements such as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, rotation, and circumduction. This extensive range of motion is made possible by the glenohumeral joint, a ball-and-socket joint formed between the head of the humerus and the glenoid fossa of the scapula. However, this mobility comes at the expense of stability, making the shoulder heavily reliant on surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the joint capsule for support rather than its bony structures.2

Unlike desktop computers, laptops have a fixed screen and keyboard, forcing users to compromise between comfortable typing and proper screen height. When the keyboard is positioned for typing, the screen sits too low, encouraging neck flexion.1

As the head moves forward, its center of gravity shifts away from the cervical spine, increasing the workload on the muscles that support the head and shoulder girdle. Poor posture also alters the normal mechanics of the shoulder complex. The upper trapezius and levator scapulae become overactive as they work continuously to support the head and neck, while the shoulder blades move into scapular protraction. This causes the rhomboids and lower trapezius to become less effective, reducing scapular stability and placing additional stress on the surrounding muscles.
