Maharashtra: On August 27, Dr. Rajendra Rupanvar, a medical officer at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital in the Satara District, tried to commit suicide at one of the busiest areas of Maharashtra by climbing a high-power electricity tower at the Sion railway station. He was brought down by fire brigade personnel and taken to the Sion hospital, where he died due to a cardiac arrest during his treatment.
On July 27, a man named Prakash Kondedeshmukh, along with his bodyguard, approached Dr. Rajendra Kumar to seek a medical fitness certificate that is required to get a gun license in the country.
According to reports, Dr.Rupnavar denied him the service due to technical difficulties. However, Prakash did not take the rejection well. He told Dr. Rajendra that he was an assistant of a former minister, Tanaji Sawant, and later sought the certificate from Rupnavar’s senior, Dr. Leela Madane.
Dr. Rajendra Rupnavar’s brother, Sagar, told The Indian Express that Kondedeshmuskh threatened Dr. Rupnavar and told him that he would make it hard for him to survive in the Phaltan Subdistrict Hospital.
On July 28, Dr. Rupnavar was suspended from the hospital, and an inquiry was started against him by the hospital authorities.
His family alleged that he was suspended because he refused to issue the fitness certificate to Kondedeshmukh. They also mentioned that Dr. Rupnavar was depressed after he was suspended without any solid reason.
His friends said that he didn’t want to say much on the same matter and kept it to himself. His colleagues later noticed that he had posted about harassment and pressure on social media.
On July 29, Dr. Rajendra Rupnavar had written a suicide note on his left hand and posted it on his WhatsApp status. Dr. Apurv Dalvi, national coordinator of the All India Medical Students Association, alerted the Indian Medical Association.
Dr. Dalvi said he couldn’t attend Dr. Rupnavar’s call a day before because he was busy in an FMGE protest in New Delhi.
When alerted by Dr. Dalvi, IMA Maharashtra President Dr. Santosh Kulkarni made an inquiry with Dr. Leela Madane. Dr. Leela Madane then informed Dr. Kulkarni that Rupnavar was with his family and he was doing fine.
On August 25, Dr. Rupnavar travelled to Mumbai from Satara. His family had noticed that his distress had significantly grown right before he travelled. His colleagues also added that he was travelling to Mumbai in the hope of meeting some senior authorities and discussing his problems. According to the reports, he was unable to meet the senior officials.
On August 27, Dadar Government Railway Police Station received a call about a man who had climbed an electricity tower at the Sion railway station. The fire Brigade squad reached the spot along with the police soon after and brought Rupnavar down after some persuasion.
Anil Kadam, senior police inspector of Dadar GRP, said, “We had received information that a man had climbed an electric tower and was visibly distressed. We alerted the fire brigade department and two teams reached the spot. We were all trying to pacify him, but he was in distress and was not in a position to listen.”
According to the GRP, Dr. Rupnavar told him that he was recently suspended from his job and that there was an ongoing inquiry against him.
Dr. Rupnavar also tried to hang himself before he was rescued and taken to the Sion hospital. He was admitted to the ICU ward; doctors later found out that he had gone through many cervical injuries.
His brother Sagar was informed about his admission to the hospital. According to Sagar, Dr. Rupnavar was in a stable condition during his treatment but died on August 31 due to a cardiac arrest.
The hospital said that the exact cause of his death will be confirmed through medical files and post-mortem reports given to the police.
Dr. Leela Madane was suspended on the same day of Dr. Rupnavar’s death.
A zero FIR has been registered based on the complaint that was made by Dr. Rupnavar’s family and the matter has been transferred to Satara police after a case of abetment of suicide was registered.
Police Superintendent Nikhil Pingle, of Satara Police Station has confirmed that the case was transferred.
The family has requested a deeper investigation. They have requested an SIT probe to look into Dr. Rajendra Rupnavar’s suspension, the pressure on him to make the certificate and the official inquiry.
