Jabalpur, January 28, 2026: A serious case has surfaced in Jabalpur involving the alleged abduction of a 72-year-old retired ophthalmologist, Dr. Hemlata Srivastava. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to local authorities, demanding urgent intervention over the incident.
Dr. Srivastava is a former eye specialist at Jabalpur District Hospital. She lives alone in the city’s posh Wright Town area. According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday morning, January 26, 2026, when unknown individuals allegedly forcibly took her away in a white car. The incident was captured on video, which shows some people arriving in the vehicle that had a partially erased number plate (MP 20 ZX 9..43).
During the incident, Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee, Dr. Srivastava’s neighbor, attempted to intervene and questioned where she was being taken. The occupants of the car reportedly claimed that some people were waiting for her at a temple and insisted on taking her there, saying that any discussion could take place at the Gayatri Temple.
Dr. Srivastava is known among her patients for her simple and friendly nature. She has suffered significant personal losses in recent years. Her son, Dr. Rachit Srivastava, passed away four years ago, and her husband, Mahesh Srivastava, died just a month ago. Since then, she has been living alone.
The doctor owns substantial property, including over 20,000 square feet of land and a bungalow, which some individuals are reportedly eyeing. Reports also suggest that her physical and mental health is not stable.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Collector and Superintendent of Police of Jabalpur, IMA President Dr. Richa Sharma made serious allegations. She stated that Dr. Hemlata was forcibly made to get into the car and taken to a temple “to die.”
Dr. Sharma further alleged that on January 22, 2026, Dr. Srivastava was fraudulently misled into donating her property to the Gayatri Mandir through a registered will, at a time when she was physically and mentally incapacitated.
The IMA has expressed grave concern over Dr. Srivastava’s medical condition, stating that she requires immediate admission and treatment in an Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU). Instead of being hospitalized, she was allegedly taken to the temple premises.
“The temple authorities have shifted her to the temple premises to let her die at the earliest, without proper treatment, so that they can acquire the property as soon as possible with malafide intentions,” Dr. Sharma wrote in the complaint.
The IMA president also raised questions about the role of Dr. Srivastava’s sister, a gynecologist, alleging that she is part of the conspiracy, refusing treatment, and “wants her to die.”
Madan Mahal Police Station in-charge Dhiraj Raj confirmed that the police have received the complaint from the IMA regarding the elderly doctor being taken away in a white car.
“Police are trying to ascertain Dr. Hemlata’s current whereabouts and her condition. The entire matter is under investigation,” he told Bhaskar English.
