Lucknow, January 10, 2026 — Police have arrested Dr. Rameezuddin Nayak, a 31-year-old senior resident doctor from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, in connection with multiple serious criminal allegations. The arrest took place near the City Station gate in Lucknow on Friday after the doctor had been on the run since late December 2025. Police had announced a reward of ₹50,000 for credible information leading to his arrest.

Dr. Nayak faces charges of allegedly raping a junior woman doctor under false promises of marriage, allegedly coercing her into an abortion without her consent and pressuring her to change her religion. According to police, the allegations were first formally recorded in a First Information Report (FIR) on December 23, 2025 at the Chowk police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.

Investigators have also identified allegations from another woman medical student from Agra Medical College. Police said both survivors have provided written statements alleging sexual exploitation and coercive actions by Dr Nayak.

Legal Action and Investigation

Dr. Nayak was produced before a local court after his arrest and remanded to judicial custody. His parents, Salimuddin (70) and Khateeja (67), were earlier arrested on January 5, 2026. Police said they are also in judicial custody and are implicated in the alleged coercion of the victims.

According to investigators, proceedings have been initiated under laws governing proclaimed offenders to attach properties linked to Dr Nayak. Notices for property attachment were pasted at three locations: his flat in Lucknow’s Hussainabad area, his ancestral house in Pilibhit district in Uttar Pradesh, and a house in Khatima, Uttarakhand. Officials said that if Dr Nayak does not surrender within a month, these properties could be formally attached. Police said raids are being conducted across Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states in search of further evidence and to trace any additional victims.

University Response and Administrative Actions

University officials stated that KGMU immediately suspended Dr. Nayak from duties following the initial complaint and FIR registration. The internal disciplinary committee recorded statements from the complainant, the accused, their families and other faculty members. Based on its inquiry, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) recommended termination of Dr. Nayak from the residency programme and possible cancellation of his admission. These recommendations have been forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor and relevant regulatory authorities for final action in accordance with medical education regulations.

In addition, KGMU officials said the university formed a seven-member committee to investigate alleged unlawful religious conversion activities within the campus. Notices were posted across departments seeking information from staff and students about similar complaints, with provisions for confidential submissions. Officials stated the initiative aimed to ensure safety and to identify any unlawful practices.

Background of the Case

The case became widely known after a female junior doctor, a Hindu resident at KGMU, attempted suicide on December 17, 2025. According to police sources, the attempt followed what the complainant described as sustained pressure and harassment linked to a relationship with Dr Nayak that began in mid-2025. She alleged Dr Nayak had misled her about his marital status, repeatedly promised marriage, allegedly forced an abortion and then pressured her to convert her religion. This complaint was first lodged through the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s grievance portal before the FIR was registered.

The incident has drawn public attention because it involves criminal law provisions related to sexual exploitation, reproductive autonomy and unlawful religious conversion. Police have issued non-bailable warrants and intensified efforts to complete the investigation and support judicial proceedings. Further legal action will depend on ongoing inquiries and evidence collection.
