A junior resident doctor at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow attempted suicide on December 17, 2025, after allegedly facing pressure related to religious conversion in connection with a personal relationship. The details emerged through a complaint filed by the doctor’s father on the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s public grievance portal.

The doctor is a first-year MD pathology resident at the university. She was found unconscious in her hostel room and was immediately shifted to the KGMU Trauma Centre. Doctors later moved her to critical care, where she continues to receive treatment under medical supervision.

Allegations Mentioned in the Official Complaint

According to the complaint, the resident had been in a relationship with a fellow doctor since July 2025. Her father alleged that the male colleague insisted that she convert to his religion as a condition for marriage. The complaint states that she refused and that the relationship ended thereafter.

The family claims that the alleged pressure and subsequent events caused emotional distress, which preceded the suicide attempt. The allegation document also refers to emotional exploitation and ongoing harassment by the colleague following her refusal to convert.

Authorities have not yet verified these allegations, and the matter remains under investigation.

University Response and Administrative Action

King George’s Medical University has constituted a fact-finding committee to examine the incident. The university stated that it has not received any written complaint directly so far. However, the proctorial cell has been directed to immediately examine any complaint if submitted and take action in accordance with institutional rules, including informing the police when necessary.

The Vice-Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission, Aparna Yadav, has said that appropriate legal action, including registration of an FIR, will be initiated if the allegations are substantiated.

Campus Protests and Public Reaction at KGMU

The incident has triggered protests on the KGMU campus by activists from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, who demanded strict action against the accused doctor and alleged that religious conversion activities were taking place within the university. Protesters called for the accused’s expulsion and a comprehensive inquiry.

Authorities stated that decisions would be guided by the findings of the fact-finding committee and urged restraint while the inquiry is underway, adding that law and order arrangements are being monitored.

Mental Health Risks Among Resident Doctors

Resident doctors experience higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression compared with the general population. Long working hours, academic pressure, sleep deprivation, and interpersonal conflicts contribute to psychological strain.

Emotional stress, when combined with limited access to mental health support or delayed reporting of grievances, can increase the risk of self-harm. Experts highlight the importance of early identification of mental distress and timely intervention.

Why Mental Health Support Is Critical for Resident Doctors

Many medical colleges and hospitals have begun introducing counselling services, peer support systems, and structured grievance redressal mechanisms. However, stigma around mental health and fear of professional repercussions often prevent doctors in training from seeking help.

Healthcare institutions increasingly recognise the need for confidential and accessible mental health services to protect the well-being of resident doctors.

MedBound Times also runs a weekly mental health column where readers can submit their questions, which are addressed by a qualified clinical psychologist, Dr. Prerna Kohli.

Investigation Status and Current Condition of the Resident

At present, no official conclusions have been issued regarding the allegations mentioned in the complaint. Investigations by the university and statutory bodies are ongoing. Authorities have stated that appropriate action will follow once all facts are verified. The focus remains on the resident doctor’s recovery and on ensuring a safe, supportive environment for medical professionals in training.
