Lucknow, January 7, 2026: A deeply troubling case has emerged from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, where a first-year junior resident doctor attempted suicide on December 17, 2025. The incident is allegedly linked to pressure for religious conversion to Islam arising from a personal relationship with a fellow Hindu doctor. What began as an attempted suicide case but has now escalated into a major criminal investigation involving multiple victims, alleged forced religious conversions, sexual exploitation, and coerced abortions.
The case has since widened with the arrest of the accused Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak's parents for their alleged involvement, while the doctor himself remains absconding as police intensify efforts to trace him.
The doctor who attempted suicide was a first-year MD Pathology resident at KGMU, who found unconscious in her hostel room on December 17. She was then shifted to the KGMU Trauma Centre for the treatment and later transferred to critical care, where she continues to receive treatment under medical supervision.
According to a complaint filed by her father on the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s public grievance portal, the victim had been in a relationship with a fellow doctor, Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak, since July 2025. The complaint alleges that Dr. Nayak insisted she convert to his religion as a precondition for marriage. When she refused, the relationship ended. According to the family’s claims, she continued to face emotional exploitation and harassment, which preceded her suicide attempt.
Following the complaint, Uttar Pradesh Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak, a junior resident doctor at KGMU. The charges include sexual exploitation, criminal intimidation, blackmail, and alleged forced religious conversion.
The KGMU administration swiftly suspended Dr. Nayak. University officials stated that the decision was taken to ensure an impartial inquiry and maintain campus safety.
The investigation took a significant turn when police discovered that other women doctors may have faced similar harassment by the accused. On December 23, 2025, another female medical student from KGMU submitted a written complaint at Chowk police station. She alleged that a senior doctor established physical relations with her under the pretext of marriage and later forced her to terminate her pregnancy. She also alleged pressure to convert her religion.
An FIR was registered under sections related to rape, miscarriage, and marriage by deceit under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 3 and 5 of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021.
Additionally, a woman medical student from Agra Medical College came forward with similar accusations against the doctor, alleging sexual assault, forced religious conversion, and miscarriage.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that both victims recorded their statements before a magistrate.
In a major development, Lucknow Police arrested the parents of the absconding doctor Salimuddin (70) and Khateeja (67) from a rented flat in the Thakurganj area of Lucknow.
DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava revealed that the couple allegedly played a key role in the religious conversion and forced miscarriage of the two medical students.
“Both the survivors have given written testimonies in the presence of a magistrate that they were forcibly converted, sexually exploited, and subjected to miscarriage and not only by the doctor but also by his parents,” said a police officer involved in the investigation.
During questioning, the arrested parents allegedly revealed the names of a Muslim cleric who performed a nikah and a witness. Police are verifying their roles and may name them as accused if evidence is found.
Dr. Rameez Uddin Nayak remains absconding. Lucknow Police has deployed five teams across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to locate and arrest him.
A non-bailable warrant has already been issued against Dr. Nayak, and the reward for information leading to his arrest has been increased from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000.
DCP West Vishwajeet Srivastava stated that search operations have been intensified. Searches were conducted at his residence in Uttarakhand and his ancestral house in Pilibhit, though no leads on his whereabouts have been found so far.
Police have indicated that they may move court to seek permission to attach his property if he continues to evade arrest.
