The crash may have happened last week, but the weight of its impact is still unfolding, especially for the medical community. Two more young and aspiring doctors have now been confirmed dead in the tragedy.
The Young Lives Lost
The victims have been identified as:
1. Dr. Bhavesh Senta, a medical intern from the 2019 MBBS batch at Government Medical College, Surat
2. Dr. Taskin Inayatali Saiyed, a student from the 2018 MBBS batch at NHL Medical College, Ahmedabad
It is believed that both doctors were present at BJ Medical College at the time of the crash. However, whether they were on board the aircraft or had visited the campus for other reasons remains unconfirmed.
What Happened That Day
On June 12, an Air India flight bound for London took off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Within minutes, the plane crashed into the hostel mess of BJ Medical College. The accident claimed the lives of 241 out of 242 people onboard, along with nearly 20 others who were in and around the hostel building.
Response from the Medical Community
The Junior Doctors Network of the Indian Medical Association (IMA JDN) shared a condolence post on X, writing, “Their untimely demise is a heartbreaking reminder of how deeply this tragedy has impacted our medical fraternity. IMA JDN stands in solidarity with the family, friends, and colleagues in this moment of grief.”
To honor the victims, the Ahmedabad Medical Association held a prayer meet on June 17 at 5 PM at its Ashram Road office. Members of the medical fraternity from across Gujarat joined to pay their respects to the lives lost.
A Big Loss for the Medical Fraternity
Twenty students were injured in the incident. Eleven have since been discharged from Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, where all were taken for emergency treatment.
The tragedy also affected residents of the Atulyam building, which houses super-speciality doctors and their families. The wife of one such resident sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Still Reeling from the Loss
The crash has left Gujarat’s medical community shaken, with several promising young lives lost. As the investigation continues, what remains is a deep sense of grief, not just for the tragedy itself, but for the futures that ended far too soon.
