In a shocking case from Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh, a pregnant woman was wrongly told her fetus had died in the womb, only to deliver a healthy baby boy hours later in a private hospital.
What Happened
Around 1 am on Wednesday, Manisha Kumari and her husband, Binod Saw, residents of Chalkusa in Barkatha block, reached Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College & Hospital (SBMCH), one of the biggest government hospitals in South Chhotanagpur Division.
At the female OPD, nurses asked to see her pathological reports, which showed that Manisha’s hemoglobin levels were under 10 mg/dL. Without any further checkup, they declared the fetus had died in the womb and told the couple there was nothing more they could do.
When Binod protested, he was directed to the operation theatre (OT) to meet Head Nurse Vibha. But when he knocked, the OT door was locked from inside. Other nurses claimed the head nurse and some staff were asleep inside.
What Followed
Refusing to give up, Manisha was rushed to a private hospital. There, doctors confirmed the baby was still alive. A few hours later, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy through C-section.
Binod, while speaking to The Times of India, said, “I kept shouting and knocking on the door in vain. Manisha’s labor intensified, leaving me with no other option but to rush her to the private Mission Hospital, located about 2 km away from SVMCH. When tests were conducted there, Manisha’s hemoglobin was found to be 12 gm /dl. At 3 am, C-section surgery was done, and she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, weighing 4 kg.” He also added, “If I had not brought her to this private hospital, I would have lost both my wife and son. I want justice in this regard so that no one faces the same ordeal.”
Allegations of Threats
As the news spread, a local leader came forward to support the couple, but he, too, was allegedly threatened by hospital staff on charges of harassing one of their female colleagues.
BJP leader Arjun Saw said he received threats. "I talked to female doctors over the phone and have the recording. The doctors are now trying to divert the case.”
Official Reactions and Inquiry
By Thursday, the case had reached the top health authorities in the state. Jharkhand's Health Minister Irfan Ansari and Hazaribagh DC ordered a probe into the incident and assured strict action.
I have spoken to the superintendent of SBMCH, Dr. Anukaran Poorthi, and instructed him to immediately constitute an investigation team and provide a detailed investigation report. Action will be taken against the culprits. The hospital management should ensure that such incidents do not occur.
Shahi Prakash Singh, DC, Hazaribagh
Manish Jaiswal, Hazaribagh MP, said:
“The Health Minister has failed to ensure proper treatment in government hospitals. I will take up this matter at a higher level and meet the hospital superintendent on Friday.”
