In retaliation, a prominent British plastic surgeon attempted to murder a fellow doctor who had testified against him in professional misconduct hearings. The attacker, 61-year-old burns specialist Jonathan Peter Brooks, has now been convicted of attempted murder in a case that has stunned the medical community.
Planned and Premeditated Attack?
On a cold January night in 2021, Brooks cycled to the home of retired surgeon Dr Graeme Perks in Nottinghamshire. Dressed in full camouflage gear, he carried a pitchfork, a can of petrol, matches, and a knife. His aim: was to set the house on fire and, if necessary, kill the man inside.
Brooks entered the conservatory and doused the floor in petrol, preparing to set the house on fire. But before he could strike a match, Dr Perks arrived to investigate the noise, believing it might be his son. What followed was a brutal attack that left Dr. Perks with fatal stab wounds to his liver and pancreas.
"I thought I was going to die."
Despite being given only a 5% chance of survival, Dr. Perks miraculously pulled through after undergoing three major surgeries and being placed in a medically induced coma.
Recalling the moment, he said:
Nothing was said, and the next thing I remember was feeling a blow to my body. I put my hands to the area where I felt it and it was warm and sticky, and I thought I felt something poking out from my abdomen and I decided that I must have been stabbed and that I needed to get back to the house.

The Aftermath: Brooks Found in Hypothermic State
Police responding to the incident found broken glass near the conservatory and a strong smell of gasoline in the air. Meanwhile, Brooks was located hours later, sleeping on a nearby bench, suffering from hypothermia and a bruise on his right hand.
His wife alerted authorities after finding blood in her garage and reporting him missing.
Verdict:
During the trial, Prosecutor Tracy Ayling KC said,
"His intention was, say the Crown, to break into Mr Perks's house, set fire to it and if necessary, stab Mr Perks. In short, he intended to kill Mr Perks by either or both those means."
Brooks was found guilty of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life, and possession of a knife in a public place. He was not in court for the verdicts and now faces a possible life sentence.
