The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has announced the new date for NEET PG 2025—August 3. The exam was earlier scheduled for June 15 but got delayed after the Supreme Court directed the board to conduct the exam in a single shift.
The Supreme Court has now approved NBEMS’ request to postpone the exam to the proposed date.
What Happened in Court
In Friday’s hearing, the Supreme Court bench, led by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Augustine George Masih, questioned NBEMS on why the exam needs to be held in August and what steps they’ve taken since May 30.
NBEMS said they’ve had multiple meetings and discussions, and their tech partner TCS has made it clear that August 3 is the earliest possible date for the exam under the new format. They also pointed out the time needed for technical and logistical setups.
Justice Masih asked if the exam could happen in July instead. But the Additional Solicitor General requested time till Monday to discuss the issue. However, Justice Mishra stepped in and said the Court will pass the order that day itself.
The bench allowed the proposed date of August 3 but made it clear—no more extensions will be given.
Why the One-Shift Rule
The Court wants the exam in a single shift so that all students take the same paper at the same time. This avoids unfairness due to difficulty level variations in multiple shifts, a concern students have raised before.
Why the Delay
The NBEMS explained that conducting such a large exam in a single shift is a big task. They’ll need time to:
Set up secure exam centers
Arrange more computers and backups
Install security software
Train staff and run mock drills
Test the entire system thoroughly
They also said that the number of exam centers needs to be almost doubled, because everyone will now take the test at the same time. This wasn’t the case earlier.
It’s a high-stakes exam with lakhs of candidates, so the board says it needs time to ensure everything, from systems to staff, is in place.
What’s Next for Students
NBEMS will reopen the application window, giving students a chance to reselect their test city.
After that, the board will go through all new preferences, and test cities will be allotted. Students will be informed of their city at least two weeks before the exam, and the admit card (with specific center details) will be out four days before the test.
With the new date confirmed and the steps ahead clearly laid out, the uncertainty around NEET PG 2025 is finally settling. For lakhs of aspirants, this update brings some clarity on how to move forward.
