A woman doctor from Maharashtra’s Thane district allegedly committed Suicide by jumping off from the newly constructed Atal Setu bridge in Mumbai.
The woman is identified as 43-year-old Kinjal Kantilal Shah. She jumped off from the Atal Setu bridge (which connects south Mumbai to Navi Mumbai) on Monday. The police are yet to locate the woman’s body.
The woman is a doctor by profession, living with her father at the Navin Asha building on Dadasaheb Phalke Road in the Parel area of Mumbai. The police said that Kinjal had been struggling with depression for several years and was going through the treatment. A suicide note was retrieved from her home which shows she had been suffering from severe depression for over the last eight years and was going to Atal Setu Bridge to end her life.
Rajendra Kota, senior police inspector of the Nhava Sheva police station said that the woman on Monday afternoon took a taxi near her home and asked the driver to take her to Atal Setu bridge. At about 14.3 kilometers from Mumbai, Kinjal started asking the driver to stop the taxi. The driver was hesitant, but she urged him. The driver stopped the taxi and she got out. She then went a few steps behind & jumped off the bridge. Immediately the driver informed the Navi Mumbai police. The police along with the help of coastal police, local villagers, and rescuers started a search operation.
According to the police, Kinjal informed her father on Monday that she was going out for some work. When her father returned home, he found the suicide note in which she expressed that she was going to Atal Setu Bridge to end her life. The police also said that in her suicide note, she also cited that nobody should be held responsible for her death not even the taxi driver who taken her to the location.
Her father filed a missing complaint at the Bhoiwada police station, in Mumbai.
A police officer said that the woman's father reported the issue at the Bhoiwada police station. They initiated searching for her and carefully examining the CCTV footage they ascertained that she boarded a taxi at around 1:30 pm and they were also looking for more details on her movement, they came to know that she jumped off the bridge. Rajendra Kota, senior police officer also said that they have found CCTV footage of her jumping into the sea at 2:14 pm. They are trying to trace her. He also said that she had jumped into the deep sea.
The Mumbai's Bhoiwada police filed a missing report and Navi Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva police registered the incident in their documents.
